I selected Layer 1 in the Layers panel and changed the Composite Method to Default, which hides the sketch. At this point, I chose to paint on the olive-green layer rather than the sketch in my painting. I wanted this image to look like an oil painting, so I used brush variants from the Impasto category, which apply strokes with an implied three-dimensional effect. The color ring and triangle become grayed out and the Clone Color button turns blue, which indicates that the colors you paint with will be picked up from the clone source that you can see in the Clone Source panel. This allows the artist canvas texture to show through. In the Toolbox, choose Artist Canvas from the Paper selector. That’s because it’s a ghost image that is used for tracing purposes only, so the layer is actually blank. On the Layers palette, you’ll notice that the image does not display in the layer.
The Clone Source panel will also allow you to adjust the tracing paper opacity using the slider. I’ve added “1 ptr” to the file name, to remind myself that it’s stage one in Painter.
